RYA Cruising Instructor
Duration: Five days with a second trainer joining on the final day as course moderator.
The RYA Cruising Instructor (CI) Course is designed for experienced Yachtmaster Offshore skippers to gain the skills required to instruct practical sailing courses.
- Hold a commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (with all associated certification in date).
- Hold a valid first aid certificate which is accepted by the RYA (go to www.rya.org.uk).
- Successfully complete RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) Course, even if not required for commercial endorsement until next revalidation of commercial endorsement.
- Candidates must enrol on and pass the online pre-course RYA Cruising Instructor Theory test (incorporating teaching background theory and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory).
This RYA Cruising Instructor course is a blend of assessing the candidate's knowledge, providing a structured framework to instruct, coach, observe and deliver constructive feedback and ensure the structure and standards required of RYA courses up to Day Skipper Practical are understood.
Candidates must therefore ensure they have sufficient underpinning knowledge & experience prior to attending this course.
This qualification is recognised by both the ISA & RYA, as such you will be qualified to teach RYA Start Yachting, ISA and RYA Competent Crew, as well as the ISA and RYA Day Skipper practical sailing courses.
The CI qualification is the first step in teaching within the practical cruising scheme and is a pre requisite before moving up to the Yachtmaster Instructor qualification.
Our CI courses are run by Sovereign Sailing's principal James Lyons. We are uniquely placed to offer this training as James is the only Irish based RYA Cruising Instructor Trainer. James has been teaching sailing for 20 years and has been involved in instructor training in Ireland since 2008. All of our courses benefit from his unique experience as both an ISA & RYA Instructor Trainer.
